• How to Get Rid of Honeybees Without Harming Them

  • A while ago, I was working near the carports on my shop located in my backyard. I heard a very loud buzzing and noticed what looked like aleast 1000’s bees flying all under the carports. Something had definitely agitated the bees otherwise I would not even know they were there in the first place.

Upon further investigation, I saw that the bees had started a hive in an large empty cardboard box and there were a lot of them flying around and enter/exiting the ‘handle hole’ in the box. There was no way I was going to be getting close to them as they were on the defensive and would have stung me. Nevertheless, I needed to get rid of them as I needed my shop area back.

As luck would have it, my neighbor, Joe, amongst his many other talents, is a beekeeper and he maintains a few hives on his own property. So, I asked him to come over and take a look to see what could be done.

  • No problem! He waited to just before dusk when most of the bees have returned to the hive. He suited up in his beekeeping outfit along with a small can which had smoke coming out of it and which calms the bees down. He began the smoking process and once the bees were as calm as they were going to get, he moves the cardboard box to his property.

  • He then placed a smaller box in the carport where the existing cardboard box was located to hopefully get the remaining bees, so he could transfer them as well.

  •

He then set-up a real beehive beside the cardboard box and began the process of dissecting the cardboard box and transferring the honey cone to the new hive. This entails having to cut the existing cone in parts that would fit into the new hive structure.

What an amazing process to watch!

So, if you find yourself with unwanted honeybees building a hive somewhere on your property, please do not harm the bees, they are an important part of our environment. Just find yourself a “bee whisperer’ like my neighbor Joe to help you out.

Oh! and I get the first jar of honey when its time to harvest.
